One nice feature (or lack thereof) of all these IM clients is their lack of advertising. Epistula has lots of features, but is still very new and some features are still not yet implemented or working correctly. Jabberwocky is more of a workhorse, with few of the fancy features like emoticons and other visual goodies that characterize modern IM clients.

In the instant messaging world, there are two major options: the free classic program Jabberwocky, which connects to multiple services (MSN, Yahoo, AIM, and ICQ) via gateways through the Jabber network, and the brand new multiclient program Epistula, which is available for OS4 only. New versions come out all the time-I still haven't upgraded to the latest beta yet. The program is free but James, who goes by the IRC nickname of jahc, asks that people who like using the program send a small donation to him via PayPal. The program has so many nice little touches that it has become my IRC client of choice, replacing mIRC on Windows. Not only can typed URLs be double-clicked on to open in the browser of one's choice, but WookieChat keeps a log of all URLs typed in that channel that can be browsed at the user's leisure.

A simple text-based scripting system allows a Wookie user to automatically connect to all servers and channels, including any required nickname registration confirmations, every time the program starts up. The Wookie, as its fans call it, started out as quite a minimalist client, but James kept on updating it, and today it is one of the most full-featured clients on any platform. I have found that with a combination of IBrowse and AWeb I can view most web sites, including the content management systems needed to post stories to Ars Technica. IBrowse 2.4 was recently released, just in time for bundling with the final version of OS4, and it includes many updates to fix JavaScript issues with certain sites. Lastly, IBrowse 3.0 is under development, which will be fully PowerPC native and support CSS. The long-standing bounty to port Mozilla/Firefox to AmigaOS is still active, although one of the developers of OS 4 believes that it will be easier to wait until Firefox 3 is released before porting, as that version will have a redesigned cross-platform imaging engine. The developers of AWeb, the open-sourced PowerPC-native web browser, are working on porting the KHTML rendering engine to work with that browser, much as Apple did when originally developing Safari. Surfing the web without CSS makes most sites look a little funny, but it does not prevent access to any content.įortunately, multiple efforts are under way to fix this problem. Unfortunately, at the moment the available web browsers for OS4 are still lacking some important features, the most notable being CSS support.
Web browsing is one of the most important applications of any operating environment these days, and the Amiga is no exception. The finest, most exciting OS in the world would be nothing more than a novelty without applications to run under it.įortunately, between classic Amiga applications and native, PowerPC-compiled programs, OS4 has applications available in all major categories. If you don't want to reboot just copy that AmiSSL drawer over to ENV: and restart IBrowse.Ĭreate a new directory (drawer in ENVARC: called AmiSSL (ENVARC: lives in SYS:Prefs/Env-Archive)An operating system is useless without applications. So to summarise, in the path 'SYS:Prefs/Env-Archive/AmiSSL' there is a 4 byte file called 'SSL_CLIENT_VERSION' the content of which is 'tls1'.
Save this text file into your newly created AmiSSL directory with the filename 'SSL_CLIENT_VERSION' (without quoues) Use your favourite text editor to create a text file containing four characters as follows (without quotes) : 'tls1' You can set it up manually though quite simply:Ĭreate a new directory (drawer :) in ENVARC: called AmiSSL (ENVARC: lives in SYS:Prefs/Env-Archive) The OS3.9 version can create directories in ENV: and the 3.1 version not. There was some confusion about the setenv command as it differs between the OS3.9 version and OS3.1.
Make sure both 'SSL v2 support' and 'SSLv3 support' are enabled
In IBrowse go to the Menu > Preferences > Settings. Are you certain that you have the env var set up correctly and IBrowse security configured correctly?
